The man that was the red dot from the map looked to the sky as a giant flaming bird took off on the other side of campus. The man in red took out his magical communicator and spoke into it, âThere is at least one unregistered mage at this school. I have yet to determine if she is the one we are looking for. The boy did not have any contact with her. I will report back when I know more.â

I was in heaven. I was reunited with Kalli, and she had even ditched the popular kids for me. I still wasnât sure that was a good social career move, but I was glad she did it, anyway. She currently ranted in my ear, I canât believe those kids. They were so rude. You didnât deserve that. Iâve been with you for days now, and you havenât looked at my butt once. Wait, are you looking at my butt right now? You better not be.
I leaned back and laughed, careful not to relinquish my grip on her waist.
Donât worry, I am definitely not looking at your butt.
Her mind growled in my ear, Why? Is there something wrong with my butt?
I didnât know how to answer that question, but she didnât wait for one and continued her rant, You know what, Mel? It was kind of nice being accepted by those kids. I always wanted to know what it was like to be part of the upper crust. Well, now I do. And you know what? I think I'd rather continue being gutter trash if thatâs what I have to do to be a part of their crowd.
I didnât know what upper crust and gutter trash were, but I knew what it was like to be looked down on by the other kids.
Youâre not trash, Kalli. Youâre better than them. Better than all of them.
We flew in silence for a while. Then she said, Thank you, Mel. Youâre better than them too.
I smiled. She was willing to give up her new friends for me.
Was there a popular kidâs table in your world?
The feeling I got from the girl felt eerily similar to the way I felt about my bullies. In my world, it's the nobles who look down on the rest of us. There is no way we would ever be allowed to set foot in one of their academies. That didnât stop their children from looking down on us whenever they encountered us, though. I used to dream of escaping to their world with the fancy balls and the ruffled dresses.
Did you have fun today with those guys before I got there?
She was hesitant to answer, so I sent reassurance. They were nice enough. The part that felt amazing was how the other kids treated me just for walking with them. They didnât get nasty until you got there.
I might have told them off once or twice for not doing anything when they saw Tim bully me. You know, Kalli, if it makes you feel good to hang out with them, I think you should do it.
